On account of near fatal acute attacks, empirical treatment is required with prompt hospitalization. Treatment of porphyria is mostly symptom based. Medicines are started to give relief from pain, vomiting and nausea. 10% infusion of glucose in severe cases aids in recovery. Carbohydrate rich diet is recommended for such patients. Hematin and heme arginate are the drugs of choice for acute porphyria. These drugs also prevent hyponatremia and weakness. For long term prophylaxis cimetidine has also proved to be effective. Alert bracelets or other identification should be worn by such patients at all times in case of accidents where they may be unable to explain their condition to medics.
